Years ago, whenever you thought Yellowfin Tuna, you automatically went to Marina Vallarta because in Puerto Vallarta, if you want to go fishing, Marina Vallarta was the place to find a world class fishing boat.

You don't just get on any boat with any captain when you're targeting a possible world record Yellowfin Tuna! Naturally there are more species at the Tres Maria Islands than Yellowfin Tuna, but this article will focus on Tuna this time. But Black Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Rooter Fish, Cuberra Snappers are also available in the Summer months. All sizable and all very abundant. So it's not just a one species fishing ground, keep that in mind as we continue.

The Tres Maria Islands, leaving from Marina Vallarta, is Located at 100 miles north of Puerto Vallarta is considered at this time to be one of the best fishing grounds in the world. Not an overstatement by any stretch. The Tres Maria Islands are no secret any longer and it’s easy to find plenty of long range fishing boats posting Yellowfin Tuna. The few larger Tuna that are boated get world record boasts all the time. Nothing official or in the record books though.

Now we know the Tres Maria Islands have big and abundant fish. But did you know it was a prison island, much like Alcatraz. Isolated 60 miles from shore, in shark infested waters, you’d be crazy to try and escape from this rather large island. For this reason there was always a 12 mile invisible boundary for fishing and private boats to remain outside of. But again, things change. You see this whole island string is considered a Biosphere Reserve. In 1946 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO.) was established. I am sure you’ve heard of the Galapagos Islands and how no unauthorized people can enter the area? Well the Tres Maria Islands are now in the same category. For this reason there is still a six mile “buffer zone” which protects the reefs.

It’s now legal to fish in this area as long as you keep outside the buffer zone (I now here is being changed to sixteen (16) miles. For the guys with a little money and familiarity with the area, they understand that the summer months, once the water temperatures get over 80 degrees is when the peak Yellowfin Tuna Season begins. And who wouldn’t come down to go after Tuna when the season is correct? So it’s always best that you do your research or in legal terms, Due Diligence.

For those who remember being chased by the police in this area, those days are not exactly gone. But unless you’re doing something stupid inside the 12 miles, you’ll be ok (for now). Many of the local operations want you to think they’ve got some special deal or they know somebody that gives them permission, but it’s not like that at all. There are more and more local operations expanding their boat sizes and ranges to compete with these foreign operations. When the local companies are involved these foreign boats will be expensive by comparison. Frankly I think they’re already overpriced for what you get. This article will help the normal guy get the best bang for their dollar, that’s the goal.

It’s amazing how little is really known about this whole area and it’s always being explored by world class scientist and naturist. This is by no means an in-depth article for sure. But now maybe you know what the buzz is all about and who knows, may you’ll get a chance to experience catching a Tuna the size of a Volkswagen!

Something to remember is that during the winter season, the Southern California boys head down to the Tres Maria Islands and get the smaller and less abundant Yellowfin Tuna during breeding season. This will change if they move the buffer zone or boundaries out because you frankly need to be closer to the islands, six miles is about where most boats like to be February to May. Summer time Anglers looking for Yellowfin Tuna in this area will have no problems as this is when the peak Yellowfin tuna season is. You can on average see 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna, especially in the winter months. But once we enter the time of year where the water hits 84 degrees and up, then the bait move in and the Yellow Tuna will be anywhere from 200 lbs to over 350 lbs. The bottom line is if you fish this area during the summer high season for fishing, every time your line hits the water, you could boat a world record Yellowfin Tuna. Which by the way many pictures have been posted of Yellowfin Tuna over 400 lbs!
