aidmexfrontMexican authorities have joined forces with the country’s population to help those affected by the 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico’s southwestern coast Friday, said Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) Secretary José Calzada Rovirosa.

Calzada Rovirosa emphasized the sense of community that has arisen among the Mexican people in the face of tragedy, which hit hardest in Oaxaca’s Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. “It’s the small, everyday actions that make a difference, because there’s no such thing as a small effort,” he said.

Calzado Rovirosa is present at the affected area, representing President Enrique Peña Nieto, visiting the shelters alongside Oaxaca Gov. Alejandro Murat Hinojosa and meeting with state, military and civil authorities to discuss plans on how to help those most affected by the earthquake.

During a morning meeting at Military Zone No. 2 in Ixtepec City, Oaxaca, Calzado Rovirosa said the federal government is already working on providing 50,000 aid packages, plus another 50,000 that will be on the way.

The administration’s greatest challenge will be “to rebuild what nature has destroyed,” he added, and claimed the government will put in effect a plan that will assure victims feel the support of authorities and the people.
