"When I first met Jose Sanjuan I new he was my man, at first sight", says Stephen Hernandez, the eclectic director of Johnny's #336.
Stephen is a californian biker and leather stylist with a creative excentric personality that allows him to surf easily between his passions: european, mexican and american cousine, bikes and leathers, underground urban art, and much more.
For many years he has been working with Ana Belloso, a pure mexican delightful chef who prepares deliciuous breakfasts and lunches at the well known Johnny’s Diner in Pasillo Badillo.

One shiny and sunny day Stephen had an inspiration.
He noticed that what was really missing in Vallarta’s eterogeneous nightlife was a place where locals as well as curious cosmopolitan visitors, annoyed by the usual touristic proposals, could find the best of the local contemporary urban art scene. They therefore decided to create in the courtyard and first floor of the same restaurant a night-time Beer and Cocktail Bar where the best undergorund local artists could express themselves and show their work.

The meeting with Jose Sanjuan in the courtyard was decisive.
Jose is an internationally renowned artist, whose talent flows into the ancient river of tattoing and body painting, as well as into the fresh and younger waters of airbrushing design, a tecnique which Sanjuan now originally applies to body painting as well. Since he was a child he was attracted by plastiline, watercolors and clay. At the age of 19 he discovered tattoo art and body painting and this passion has never abandoned him since then. After a long period of activity in the US, now he travels the world as a professional tattoer and artist, never forgetting his love for the best of mexican visual tradition.

Together they decided to inaugurate the rich calendar of Johnny’s #336 proposals with an exciting tattoo, airbrush and body painting art show, which is going to be the first in Vallarta’s history as well as the beginning of what they want to be a steady and swelling annual appointment in the city’s art scene.

The basic idea behind it is to show the public that tattoing is a really sophisticated artistic tecnique that has an ancient history at his shoulders and a fervent background of talented artists.
The history of tattoing and body painting find its roots in ancient cultures all over the world (China, Japan, North and South Africa, New Zeland, Polynesia, as well as Europe – in the Romans period for example, or in the Christianity – and Israel). It has always been connected with the corporal graphic expression of cultural identity, mostly as an evident sign of cultural or tribal belonging.

“As far as this aspect is concerned”, continues Jose, “nowadays nothing has changed. While body painting is a temporary decoration of the body, a tattoo is forever and is always an expression of identity. It takes a lot of time and patience to be done and will accompanies you for all your life. Who wears it has a deep and strong emotional contact with the image drawn on his skin. Sometimes it has an important simbolic meaning, other times it can visualize and seal a sentimental pact, between two lovers for example, or a gang belonging. This is why it is really important for anyone who may decide to have this everlasting sign on his body not to choose an image from a catalog, but ruther visit the atelier of a tattoo artist, which can create a unique and customized image following his own desires, and to establish a personal relationship with him or her. There has to be a feeling between tha tattoer and the customer: tattoing is an art not a commercial practice!”
Tattoo and Airbrush Equipment |
There are lots of different styles and tecniques in tattooing, and each artist has its own personal style, but what is most important is that it is definitely safe: “equipments and materials have amazingly developed in the last decades and the best tattoo studios use only hypoallergenic colours and sterilized nails and facilities that can be used only once.
So… don’t be scared and make your dream of having one come true!”.
Johnny’s #336 is a chillout Bar with lots of vibrant proposals in the basket. Soon to come there's an EROTIC ART SHOW, as well a Urban Art Sow directly from Guadalajara’s creative underground scene. So… Check the news at Johnny’s #336 !!
