cannesfronttApril’s Daughter (Las hijas de Abril) a Mexican film directed by filmmaker Michel Franco, whose main plot is located in Puerto Vallarta, triumphed at the closing ceremony of the 70th edition of the International Cannes Film Festival after winning the Jury Prize in the section ‘Un Certain Regard’ (A Certain Glance), which rewards the new and emerging filmmakers and was presided over by the actress Uma Thurman.

This is the fourth time the talented Mexican director Michel Franco participates at the Cannes Film Festival, where he had previously won two awards. In 2012, he won the award for Best Film in the same section, ‘Un Certain Regard’, with his film After Lucia (Después de Lucía), which was also largely developed in Puerto Vallarta. In 2015 he won the award for Best Screenplay and nominated for the prestigious Palme d’Or in the Official Selection of the festival for his film Chronic.

April’s Daughter premiered at the Cannes Film Festival with critical acclaim. The film, starring Spanish actress Emma Suárez (who has worked with directors such as Pedro Almodóvar), Joanna Larequi, Valeria Becerril, Enrique Arrizon and Giovanna Zacarías, tells a dramatic mother-daughter relationship and addresses social issues such as teen pregnancy, obsession with physical appearance and fear of aging. The story is set between Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta, at a house in Conchas Chinas, with spectacular pictures of the Bay of Banderas, as well as other important locations of the city such as Los Arcos National Park and the Malecón.

The movie joins a long list of films, TV shows and music videos that have chosen Puerto Vallarta to host their productions, making our destination even more internationally known like in this case, at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
