The difference between setting a Facebook event to “public” rather than “private” can apparently be astronomical.
That’s what the father of Mexican teenager Rubi Garcia learned after thousands of people showed up for her 15th birthday bash hosted outside a small town in central Mexico on Monday.
Garcia’s coming-of-age party — known as a “quinceañera” in Latin culture — has gone viral on social media over the past few weeks, attracting over 1.2 million RSVPs and 978,000 shares, in addition to establishing its own “XV Ruby Fest” geotag on Google Maps.
“We invite you on December 26 to our daughter Rubi Ibarra Garcia’s quinceañera in La Joya,” father, Crescencio Ibarra, said in Spanish ina 45-second clip posted to an event page initially meant for family and friends.
“Everyone is cordially invited,” Ibarra added in the clip.
And practically “everyone” showed up — thanks to an errant click allowing any person with internet access to learn about the event.
Garcia and her parents welcomed the throngs of partygoers with tents and tables filled with food. People traveled to the tiny town from across the country for the larger-than-life event, with Mexican airline Interjet even offering 30% discounts on flights to the area.
“To all those who have already arrived I ask you to please do not despair because in truth we are many people and we are just seeing how to speed things up,” the birthday girl posted on Facebook Mondayafternoon. “I just ask for your patience so that we can all enjoy this party.”
An exact number of attendants was not immediately known. The quinceañera, which featured vendors and a horse race with a 10,000 peso prize, has spawned slews of internet memes and shenanigans in recent weeks.
