Tribute to Michoacan Ancestors.qr code agave

A bottle of the favorite distilled agave beverage of the deceased is a must on the altars with Day of the Dead offerings. The remembrance and memory of the deceased, on November 1 and 2, is a very important celebration in Mexico's rural communities and mezcal is always present in Michoacan family altars.

As every year, the tribute to the ancestors of Michoacán is organized by the mezcal community of Arroyo de las Nueces, in the municipality of Tzizio, which receives visitors and guests for an entertaining country day of celebration, linked to Mexican traditions and Michoacán's mezcal culture.

Dora Angélica Obeso de Pérez and master mezcal maker Jaime Guadalupe Pérez Toledo, creators of Mezcal La Perla de Tzitzio, and participants of Las Mujeres del Mezcal y el Maguey de Michoacán, are the hosts of the Arroyo de las Nueces winery, where the tradition of unearthing and uncorking bottles of aged mezcal is revived.

In addition to honoring deceased master distillers, the Arroyo de las Nueces mezcal unearthing celebrates life: mezcal made earlier in the year is aged underground, resting in glass demijohns for nine months, and on November 5, the first batch of 2022 will be uncorked for friends and guests of the Pearl of Tzitzio.

This important gathering marks the beginning of the season of end-of-the-year celebrations in which mezcal is a must. Dora, Jaime and the entire team of La Perla de Tzitzio, await their guests from 1 pm, on Saturday, November 5th, at the winery surrounded by beautiful landscapes of the Michoacan mountains, in a pleasant atmosphere where you can learn by watching the distillation process and taste the freshly made drink, but also enjoy the aged mezcal and exquisite cocktails.

This is a unique experience and an unbeatable opportunity to learn about Michoacán's processes and traditions, tasting mezcal and pairing it with Mexican food, accompanied by musical ensembles from Tierra Caliente de Michoacán. On this occasion, a wide menu will be offered with a variety of typical dishes of the regional gastronomy, prepared by the traditional cooks of Tzitzio, such as ajiaco, aporreadillo, mole, rice stews, beans and tortillas de comal, among others. In addition, fresh water, prepared drinks and signature cocktails with mezcals from La Nueva Perla de Tzitzio.

The mezcal unearthing celebration and the meal in homage to the ancestors has a cost of $800 Mexican pesos per person, and it is necessary to make reservations in advance because space is limited. The mezcal factory La Nueva Perla de Tzitzio, in Arroyo de las Nueces, is located 45 minutes away from the city of Morelia, at kilometer 19 of the Temazcal-Huetamo highway.
