In Puerto Vallarta, as in many other places, Valentine's Day has become a social tradition. Traditions tend to be repeated, not because of their origin, but because they serve a function in social life: to gather, celebrate, or simply mark a special moment in the year. Valentine's Day, although it has a very obvious commercial background, touches deeply rooted emotional and cultural fibers in people, including the inhabitants of Puerto Vallarta.

Romance is an emotional need for many people. This day provides an excuse to show affection in a tangible way, whether through gifts, outings, or special gestures. In a social setting, it is common for people to feel the need to "live up" to the expectations of a partner or group. Ignoring the celebration could be interpreted as disinterest or lack of attention towards the partner, something that few want to project.

Valentine's Day advertising campaigns not only sell products, they sell emotions, memories, and ideal moments. This marketing appeal persuades people to participate in the festivities even though they know that the prices are inflated. Being a tourist destination, many people from Vallarta feel immersed in an environment where the festivities are lived with intensity. Restaurants, beaches and events are usually ideal settings to create special moments, even if it implies a higher cost.

Many people really enjoy giving and sharing with their partners or loved ones, beyond the commercialization of the day. The act of giving or planning a special outing can be a source of personal satisfaction. In a world full of worries and stress, a day dedicated to love can be a way to escape, even for a few hours, from daily routines and problems.

Despite knowing that it is a commercial day, many people do not have clear alternative proposals to express their love. Although a homemade gesture can be just as valuable, the commercial bombardment can make it be perceived as "less significant." Although people in Puerto Vallarta (and elsewhere) may be aware of the economic influence behind Valentine's Day, the mix of emotional, cultural, and social factors makes this date still relevant. Perhaps, the important thing would be to encourage a more authentic approach to the celebration, one that prioritizes genuine gestures and meaningful experiences over unnecessary purchases.

Valentine's Day has its roots in ancient Rome, specifically in the Lupercalia festivities, which were celebrated in honor of Lupercus, the god of fertility, every February 15. During these festivities, rituals were performed that sought purification and good fortune in love and procreation.

In the 3rd century AD, the Roman Emperor Claudius II banned marriages between young people, believing that singles made better soldiers. However, a Christian priest named Valentine defied this order and continued to marry couples in secret. When he was discovered, Valentine was arrested and executed on 14 February 270. Before his death, he is said to have written a letter to his jailer's daughter, whom he had cured of blindness, signing it "Your Valentine".

Centuries later, the Catholic Church established February 14 as Valentine's Day to honor the martyr and replace the pagan celebrations of Lupercalia. Over time, the holiday evolved from a religious commemoration to a celebration of romantic love, especially in Europe during the Middle Ages.

In Latin America, the date is adapted as the Day of Love and Friendship, celebrating not only romantic relationships, but also the bonds of friendship. Today, February 14 has become globalized, becoming a day to give flowers, letters, chocolates, and share gestures of affection between couples and friends. Although it has been widely commercialized, for many it remains an opportunity to express affection and gratitude towards their loved ones.
