Course Delivered by Dr. Jeffry Steven Fernández at CUC, University of Guadalajara

The internet is a powerful and useful tool, but it can also be an environment full of risks and threats that affect users' security, privacy, and well-being.

Malware: Malicious programs like viruses, trojans, ransomware, and spyware that can steal data, damage devices, or block access to files.

Phishing: Attempts to deceive users into providing personal information, such as passwords or banking details, through fake emails or websites.

Hacking: Unauthorized access to devices or accounts to steal information or engage in illegal activities.

Dr. Jeffry Steven Fernández expertly detailed various threats and risks to guide and prepare students at the university to face potential cyber challenges. Many companies and websites collect personal data without clear consent, leading to privacy violations. Security breaches on platforms can expose personal information, such as credit card numbers or passwords, which can be misused to commit fraud or crimes, like opening bank accounts or making purchases under the victim's name.

Another issue Dr. Fernández addressed was Harmful Content and Misinformation, including:

False or manipulated information spread to mislead or influence public opinion.

Accidental or intentional exposure to violent, sexual, or extremist content, especially concerning for children and teenagers.

The use of digital platforms to bully, harass, or humiliate others, which can negatively affect mental health.

Dr. Fernández also highlighted financial risks, which have deteriorated many households’ economies and even caused significant investment losses. Examples include:

Fake offers, investment scams, or counterfeit websites designed to deceive users and steal money.

Transactions on unsecured websites exposing financial data to malicious third parties.

He also discussed the mental health threats, particularly among young internet users:

Excessive use of social media can lead to isolation, anxiety, and depression.

Constant comparisons with idealized images on social networks can harm self-perception.

False advice or treatments that may endanger users’ health.

Lastly, technical risks can cause damage to devices or lead to difficult-to-repair malfunctions, such as:

Hardware or software failures: Downloading unreliable programs can harm devices or make them vulnerable.

Data loss: The absence of backups can result in permanent loss of important information.

Measures to Mitigate These Risks:

Use of antivirus software and firewalls.

Regular software updates.

Strong passwords and two-factor authentication.

Cybersecurity education, especially for children and teenagers.

Caution when sharing personal information online.

Awareness of these risks and adopting preventive measures is essential for navigating the digital environment safely.

The event was sponsored by the Internet Society Mexico Chapter, the Centro Universitario de la Costa in Puerto Vallarta, and the University of Guadalajara.
