PUERTO VALLARTA, JALISCO.- The Breast Milk opened four months ago, but it hardly has enough milk to feed one third of hospitalized infants in Mother and Child Hospital, in need to be fed. Up to this moment, it has only has15 donors.

The Bank, located in Guadalajara’s Mother and Child "Esperanza López Mateos" Hospital, attends premature and underweight babies. The 15 volunteers donate a portion of their milk, as many times as they wish, or whenever they decide to do so. To be a donor, both, mother and their babies, have to be in good health and at home.

There is also another group of 50 women, who are also donors, but they their babies are hospitalized and whatever milk they generate is mostly for their own babies. They can only donate if and when they have a surplus.

Despite these contributions, there is a deficit of breast milk for 70% of hospitalized infants. The bank gets just enough milk to feed 30 % of the babies; the other 70 % is fed with formula, in spite of their vulnerable conditions.

"The 30% of the premature and underweight babies that are fed with donated milk are babies that have been in the hospital for a long period of time. It is expected that by feeding them with nutritious breast milk, their stayed at the hospital could be reduced. “It is necessary to promote and to create a culture of breast milk donation", commented Jorge Castro Albarrán, Manager of the milk bank. Adding that, sometimes mothers just throw their milk away, when they could very well donate it. "We intend to reach all these mothers so that with their help we fulfill our goal of feeding 100% of the babies who are hospitalized."

According to Castro Albarran, a healthy nursing mother usually generates more milk than what her baby needs. He also wants everyone to know that the milk that is donated is analyzed to determine if it is feasible to be administered to a newborn, and that it is pasteurized.

Nuevo Vallarta received its first impulse to become the first “Clean Tourist Destination” in Mexico; federal and state level environmental certificates were given to businesses in Nayarit; the Islas Marietas will have a new, modern vessel dedicated to their care.

During a ceremony held on October 31st at the Paradise Village Hotel in Nuevo Vallarta, the federal and state authorities related with the environment announced several activities to help increase the environmental efforts within the Riviera Nayarit and the state at large.

The head of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa, by its acronym in Spanish), Guillermo Haro Bélchez was in charge of announcing the Boost for Recognition of Nuevo Vallarta as a “Clean Tourist Destination.”

Besides signing the agreement, the encounter also provided a forum for the award of the Tourism Environmental Quality Certificates to businesses on a federal and state level on behalf of Profepa by the state Secretariat of Environment. Vallarta Adventures was one of the tourism-focused businesses that received a certificate.

“No one has any doubt that Nayarit is a great state with incredible natural resources and a calling for tourism,” declared Haro Bélchez. “That’s why today we want to establish a new momentum for us to attain recognition for Nuevo Vallarta as the first Clean Tourist Destination, something we’re close to achieving by the beginning of 2015.”

“We want Nayarit to become the banner state, the flagship for other clean tourism destinations,” added Guillermo Haro, as he pointed out the processes for consolidating the naming are quite advanced, which is why they are seeking for the area hotels to align themselves with the Profepa guidelines.

The Islas Marietas will have more protection

Doomsday hour is here, at least in much of the world, and so still are we.

A contestant in a roach-eating contest who downed dozens of live bugs and worms collapsed and died shortly after winning the contest in South Florida, authorities say.

About 30 contestants ingested the insects during Friday night's contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach about 40 miles north of Miami. The grand prize was a python.

Edward Archbold, 32, of West Palm Beach became ill shortly after the contest ended and collapsed outside the store, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office statement released Monday. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities were awaiting results of an autopsy to determine a cause of death.

The sheriff's office said none of the other contestants fell ill.

Unless the roaches were contaminated with some bacteria or other pathogens, I don't think that cockroaches would be unsafe to eat," said Michael Adams, professor of entomology at the University of California at Riverside. He said he has never heard of someone dying after consuming roaches.

"Some people do have allergies to roaches," he added, "but there are no toxins in roaches or related insects."

There was no updated phone number listed for Archbold in West Palm Beach.

"We feel terribly awful," said store owner Ben Siegel, who added that Archbold did not appear to be sick before the contest.

"He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice," Siegel said, adding that Archbold was "the life of the party."

A statement from Siegel's attorney said all the participants signed waivers "accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest."

The bugs consumed were from an inventory of insects "that are safely and domestically raised in a controlled environment as food for reptiles."

Teotihuacán and Monte Alban are part of the 31 cultural sites inscribed on the World Heritage List of the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to locate to Mexico in the sixth place in the world and first in Latin America and the Caribbean

Well, Mexico takes the leadership in the area as well as the country with the greatest cultural property within this list and is endorsed with the inclusion of the last December 4, in Paris, France, from the Center for Indigenous Arts of Veracruz in the record of the Best Practices for the Safeguarding of the Heritage Intangible Cultural, commented in a statement the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH).
