Researchers from the universities of the Valle de México (UVM, for its acrony in Spanish) and Sciences and Arts of Chiapas (Unicach, for its acronym in Spanish) set up Eco-Chia ecological stoves, which were delivered to communities affected by earthquakes.
The so-called Eco-Chia technology uses 70 percent less wood than traditional stoves and can generate temperatures of 400 degrees Celsius in 15 minutes, said Dr. Neín Farrera Vázquez, leader of UVM Research, Tuxtla campus.
"Food is one of the most important aspects at the moment. The stove can keep food, coffee, milk for children warm, water can be boiled, and so on."
He explained that both institutions have developed stoves for some years and that on this occasion they decided to donate them to the most affected regions of Chiapas such as Cintalapa, Cárdenas, Vistahermosa and Villamorelos.
In the statement, he emphasized that universities should provide useful knowledge and technologies to the population and to help solve specific problems.
"This is the friendly fire that we must take. There is no longer time to continue only in experiments and research reports," he said.
The Eco-Chia stove (ECO of ecological and CHIA that is Chiapas) has shown improvements in the heating rate of the comal and elimination, also it is designed so that the smoke rises to a height that does not harm the people who cook, in order to avoid respiratory tract and eyes diseases.
