Tragic Start to 2026: Fatal Crash Near Sayulita Mars New Year Celebrations

While the celebrations on the Puerto Vallarta Malecón remained largely peaceful ("saldo blanco"), the start of the year was marked by tragedy on the region's highways and a somber discovery in a residential neighborhood.

Fatal Head-On Collision Near Sayulita
Authorities have confirmed a fatal traffic accident in the early hours of New Year's Day on the federal highway near Sayulita.

The Incident: Preliminary reports indicate a head-on collision between two private vehicles. Witnesses suggest one of the cars may have invaded the opposite lane while navigating the curves near the Sayulita turnoff.

Casualties: Tragically, two fatalities have been confirmed at the scene. Emergency responders from Bahía de Banderas Civil Protection worked for several hours to clear the wreckage, causing significant delays on Highway 200 for those traveling north from Puerto Vallarta.

Status: The road has since reopened, but the National Guard (Guardia Nacional) is maintaining a heavy presence to enforce speed limits.

Foreign National Found Deceased in Las Aralias
In Puerto Vallarta proper, Municipal Police and the Prosecutor’s Office (Fiscalía) responded to a call in the Las Aralias neighborhood yesterday evening (Dec 31).

Details: A foreign national was discovered without vital signs inside a private apartment.

Cause: Early forensic indications point to natural causes, as there were no signs of forced entry or violence. However, as per standard protocol for unattended deaths, the body has been transferred to the SEMEFO (Forensic Medical Service) morgue while authorities attempt to locate next of kin.

Pirotecnia Incidents & Fire Safety
Despite strict warnings from the Civil Protection department regarding the use of pyrotechnics:

Injuries: Emergency rooms reported a relatively calm night compared to previous years, though medical teams are still treating a severe case from earlier in the week involving a male adult and a minor who suffered partial finger amputations due to mishandled fireworks.

Fires: Firefighters (Bomberos) responded to several small brush fires in the Ixtapa and Las Juntas areas shortly after midnight, likely sparked by stray "cuetes" (firecrackers). All were extinguished quickly with no damage to homes reported.

Traffic & DUIs
Alcohol Checks: The "Salvando Vidas" (Saving Lives) breathalyzer checkpoints were active throughout the night at key intersections (Francisco Medina Ascencio and the entrance to the Pittillal).

Arrests: Transit authorities have not yet released the final number of detained drivers, but anecdotal reports suggest a high volume of vehicles were towed to the corralón for exceeding the legal alcohol limit.

Editor's Note: We are awaiting the official press release from the Fiscalia regarding the identities of the victims in the Sayulita accident. We will update this story online as soon as names are released.
